Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that occurs naturally from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. Because it cannot be detected without testing, the EPA recommends that all homes be tested, as long-term exposure to elevated radon levels is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Homes with radon levels above 4.0 pCi/L should be mitigated.

Radon typically enters homes through foundation cracks, construction joints, gaps around pipes, crawlspaces, wall cavities, and sometimes well water. Once inside, it can accumulate to unsafe levels.

Lead-based paint is commonly found in homes built before 1978 and can pose serious health risks, especially to young children. D&K uses lead swab tests to detect the presence of lead-based paint and help homeowners understand potential hazards. Asbestos was widely used in older building materials for insulation and fire resistance. It is commonly found in pipe and furnace insulation, vermiculite attic insulation, popcorn ceiling textures, exterior siding, floor tiles, textured paints, and other coatings. When these materials are disturbed during cutting, sanding, or remodeling, asbestos fibers can become airborne and pose a health risk.

We identify materials suspected of containing asbestos and can test them upon request. The most common asbestos-containing materials we encounter are steam line insulation, vermiculite attic insulation, popcorn ceiling texture, and exterior siding.

Water testing is primarily performed to determine whether E. coli or other harmful bacteria are present. We collect water samples and work with certified laboratories to analyze the results, most commonly as part of a home sale involving an existing well.

Lenders may require more comprehensive testing, particularly for properties located in agricultural areas. Samples are collected, handled, and transported according to laboratory guidelines, including temperature-controlled transport when required. E. coli and bacteria results are typically available within 24–48 hours, while more extensive testing may take up to 10 days.
